This project aims to gain greater understanding of severe asthma and identify new treatments. Therefore, a crucial role is played by people with severe asthma themselves.
What can you expect if you participate?
U-BIOPRED is a study funded by a grant from the European Union Innovative Medicines Initiative and is taking place in approximately 18 centres throughout Europe. The Chief Investigator is Professor Peter Sterk, Department of Respiratory Medicine at the University of Amsterdam.
U-BIOPRED will commence in 2010 and complete in 2014.
Briefly, U-BIOPRED is a multi-centre, prospective, observational study of adults and children with severe asthma, adults and children with mild to moderate asthma, pre-school age children with wheeze, adults with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and adult healthy controls.
U-BIOPRED has the following aims:
1. To perform a cross-sectional study to characterize cohorts of patients with asthma, pre-school wheeze, COPD and healthy controls in terms of clinical features, physiological measurements and non-invasive measurement of biomarkers (including those in sputum, exhaled breath and blood).
2. To perform a longitudinal study in the severe asthma and severe pre-school wheeze cohorts, repeating the measurements made during the cross-sectional study and additionally recording patient-reported outcomes and carrying out imaging and histology of the upper and lower airways.
3. To use the measurements made as part of the cross sectional and longitudinal studies to develop phenotype handprints for adults with severe asthma.
